Admin 101

While admin certainly isn’t the most exciting aspect of your music career, admin skills are absolutely vital in ensuring that day-to-day things run smoothly and efficiently as you work towards your goals. 

Admin is essential for so many things: making sure you prepare invoices correctly so you receive the pay you’ve earned, applying for grants, drawing down funding and so much more.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate the administrative side of your music career. Let us know if you find these helpful!

Staying organised

  • Create a daily or weekly work schedule

  • Use a task list to prioritise and track your progress

  • Use a calendar to keep track of important dates and deadlines

  • Keep your work area clean and organized (this includes your laptop!)

  • Use folders and labels to keep your files and documents, physical or digital, organised (you can also use Cloud-based filing systems such as Google Drive, which means you can access your files anywhere so long as you have internet access and your logins)

Email etiquette

  • Use a professional email address and signature

  • Be clear and concise in your subject line

  • Use proper grammar and spelling

  • Be polite and courteous in your language

  • Try to respond in a timely manner

  • Use CC and BCC appropriately

Invoicing

  • Make sure to include all necessary information, such as your full name and/or company name, contact information, and invoice number

  • Use a clear and professional layout (there are lots of helpful templates online!)

  • Send invoices promptly 

  • Keep records of all invoices sent and payment received (spreadsheets are useful for this)
